From the tranquil shores of Newcastle, Australia, ambient music artist Luke Jon Shearer, the creative force behind Army of Sleep, discusses his upcoming double album, “Metanoia = Aporia”. The artist delves into the inspirations and aspirations for his newest project.

Q: Can you tell us the story behind your upcoming release? What inspired it?

A: This album evolved significantly from its inception. Initially, it was almost an ‘evil twin’ to my first Army of Sleep record. I ended up setting it aside and restarting with no specific direction. My fascination with the abstract led me to the concept of ‘Metanoia’—a transformative change, and its counterpart ‘Aporia’—a state of confusion. The music wrote itself from there. Ultimately, I decided to present it as a seamless ambient experience, as opposed to breaking it into individual songs.

Q: How would you describe the sound and style of this new project to someone who has never heard your music before?

A: It’s definitely ambient and moody, intermixing elements of beauty and peace with eeriness and unease. Each piece is designed to evoke different emotions, reflecting the dual themes of the album.

Q: What challenges did you face during the creation process of this release?

A: Producing music solo has its unique set of challenges, notably procrastination and self-doubt. Without a producer to provide immediate feedback, the process is slower and more introspective, which is both a blessing and a curse.

Q: Is there a specific track or element in the release that holds particular significance to you? Can you share more about it?

A: The entire album is significant as it mirrors the last four years of my life, including personal struggles and the global impact of COVID-19. It’s a deeply personal project that documents my experiences and transformations during this period.

Q: How has your music evolved since your last project, and what have you learned along the way?

A: Experience has been my greatest teacher. I’ve learned so much from working with other talented musicians and producers, which has helped refine my approach to music production. This album is a culmination of all those lessons, showcasing a maturity in sound and concept that I couldn’t have achieved earlier in my career.

Q: How do you feel your new release fits into the current music landscape?

A: I’ve learned to focus on creating music that satisfies me first and foremost, rather than trying to fit into a specific genre or trend. This release doesn’t conform to the typical constraints of the music industry, which I believe allows it to stand out.

Q: Did you collaborate with anyone on this project?

A: No collaborations on this project. My last collaboration with a producer was back in 2016, but the lessons I learned then have been invaluable in shaping my approach to music production.

Q: Can you talk about the visual elements associated with your upcoming release?

A: Visuals are as important as the music itself. The artwork and live show visuals are meticulously thought out to complement the themes of the album, enhancing the overall experience for the listener.

Q: Do you have any plans for gigs or tours following the release? What can your fans expect from your live shows?

A: Currently, I’m focusing on recording, but I plan to return to live performances in early 2025. Fans can expect a lot of new songs, visuals, and some exciting new additions to the live setup.

Q: Is there a message or theme in your upcoming release that you hope listeners will grasp?

A: This album is a reflection of life’s myriad emotions. I hope it resonates as a truthful exploration of the highs and lows everyone experiences.

Q: How do you hope this release will impact your career? Where do you see yourself in the music industry after its release?

A: I aim to expand my presence in the music production and sync licensing for TV and film. I’m content with progressing at my own pace, continuing to explore and innovate without being bound by industry expectations.

Q: For fans and new listeners eager to explore more of your music, how can they stay updated on your work and upcoming releases?

A: Thanks for the support! You can keep up with my work and updates on my official website, lukejonshearer.com.
