There is a specific kind of magic found in the “perfectly imperfect.” For songwriting duo Friend / Monell, their latest single “Route 19” is a masterclass in capturing that lightning in a bottle. Born from the long-standing partnership of Ray Monell and Jeffrey Friend—the minds behind award-winning tracks for Ludlow Creek—this release marks their third and most personal outing to date.
The Heart of the Drive
The inspiration for “Route 19” is rooted in the quiet, late-night drives Ray Monell took to visit his grandfather. Arriving well past midnight after long shifts at work, the scenery was always the same: the glow of the back porch light and his grandfather waiting at the kitchen table with a warm meal and homemade wine.
It is a song about memory, family, and the physical roads that bridge the gap between our busy lives and our roots.
Preserving the “Lockdown Spark”
The recording story of “Route 19” is as evocative as its lyrics. Initially captured as a demo in Jeffrey’s personal studio during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, the track carried the heavy emotional weight of a time when family and distance were at the forefront of everyone’s minds.
When the duo later attempted to re-record the song for an official release, they found that the “polished” studio version couldn’t compete with the soul of the original. In a bold move for authenticity, they chose to release that original lockdown demo. The result? A track that feels incredibly intimate, stripped of unnecessary gloss to let the honesty of the songwriting shine.
