Radiohead side project The Smile has announced the cancellation of their upcoming European tour after guitarist Jonny Greenwood fell seriously ill from an infection. In a statement released by the band, they revealed that Greenwood had to undergo emergency hospital treatment, including time in intensive care.
The statement went on to say that while Greenwood’s condition was serious, he is now out of danger and is expected to return home soon. The band expressed their gratitude to the medical team who provided care for Greenwood and asked for privacy during this time.
The Smile, which also includes Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and drummer Tom Skinner, was set to embark on a European tour starting in July. The tour was in support of their debut album, which was released earlier this year.
Fans who had purchased tickets for the tour will be refunded, and the band promised to reschedule the shows once Greenwood has fully recovered. They also assured fans that the cancellation of the tour will not affect any future plans for The Smile.
Greenwood’s illness comes as a shock to fans, as the band had just performed a successful set at the Glastonbury Festival last weekend. The guitarist has not released a statement about his condition, but fans have flooded social media with well wishes and messages of support for his speedy recovery.
The Smile was formed in 2018 and has been a highly anticipated project for Radiohead fans. The band’s debut album, “The Smile,” was met with critical acclaim and was praised for its experimental sound and unique blend of electronic and rock elements.
We wish Jonny Greenwood a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing The Smile back on stage soon.
