Joe Bonsall, the beloved tenor singer of the iconic country group, the Oak Ridge Boys, has passed away at the age of 76. The news of his death was confirmed by the band’s official social media accounts on Monday.
Bonsall had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for several years. In April of this year, he announced his retirement from touring with the Oak Ridge Boys due to his declining health.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bonsall joined the Oak Ridge Boys in 1973 and quickly became known for his powerful tenor vocals. He was a key member of the group during their rise to fame in the 1980s, with hits like “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue.”
Throughout his career, Bonsall was known for his energetic stage presence and his unwavering dedication to the Oak Ridge Boys. He was also a talented songwriter, penning several of the group’s songs including “Gonna Take a Lot of River” and “Beyond Those Years.”
In addition to his musical talents, Bonsall was also a published author, with several books to his name including “From My Perspective” and “On the Road with the Oak Ridge Boys.” He was also a passionate advocate for veterans and served as a spokesperson for the American Legion.
The Oak Ridge Boys released a statement on their website, paying tribute to their longtime friend and bandmate. “Joe was a one-of-a-kind talent and a true gentleman. His voice and presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” the statement read.
Fans and fellow musicians have also taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of Bonsall. Country music legend Dolly Parton tweeted, “I am heartbroken to hear of Joe Bonsall’s passing. He was a dear friend and an incredible talent. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Oak Ridge Boys.”
Bonsall is survived by his wife, Mary, and their two sons, Jamie and Joe Jr. The Oak Ridge Boys have announced that they will continue to tour and perform in honor of Bonsall’s memory. A private funeral service will be held for family and close friends.
