Former Journey frontman Steve Perry has teamed up with the son of Toto guitarist Steve Lukather to re-record a deep cut from the band’s 1986 album Raised on Radio. The song, titled “It Could Have Been You,” has been given a fresh new sound by Trev Lukather and his band the Effect for their debut album.
Perry, who left Journey in 1998, was approached by Trev Lukather to collaborate on the re-recording of the track. The two had previously worked together on Perry’s 2018 solo album Traces, and Lukather was eager to work with him again.
“It was an honor to have Steve Perry lend his vocals to our version of ‘It Could Have Been You,'” Trev Lukather said in a statement. “I’ve always been a huge fan of his and it was a dream come true to have him on our debut album.”
The re-recorded version of “It Could Have Been You” features a more modern and edgier sound, with Trev Lukather’s guitar skills shining through. The song also includes a powerful vocal performance from Perry, who effortlessly hits the high notes that he is known for.
“It was a pleasure to work with Trev and his band on this project,” Perry said. “They have a lot of talent and I was impressed by their passion and dedication to their music.”
The original version of “It Could Have Been You” was written by Perry and Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain. It was released as a B-side to the single “Be Good to Yourself” and has since become a fan favorite.
The Effect’s debut album, titled The Effect, is set to be released on October 15th. The album will feature a mix of original songs and re-recorded versions of classic tracks, including “It Could Have Been You.”
Fans of both Steve Perry and Journey are excited to hear the new version of “It Could Have Been You” and are eagerly anticipating the release of The Effect. With the combination of Perry’s iconic vocals and Trev Lukather’s musical talent, this re-recorded track is sure to be a hit.
