Rochester-based Americana duo Singing River, comprising Mikey James and Anthony Kuhn, has firmly established themselves as rising stars with the release of their new album, Talkin’ Destination Blues. Released on November 8, 2024, this record is a rich exploration of the roots of American music, blending the duo’s signature “northern folk” and “steamboat-pop” sound with contemporary innovation.
The album’s lead single, “She Feels Like a Diamond,” which dropped on September 13, 2024, exemplifies the duo’s creative evolution. Initially envisioned as a driving rock track, the song was reimagined with a half-time groove, creating a Levon Helm-inspired blend of horns, bass, and keys. The result is a track that perfectly encapsulates Singing River’s knack for combining traditional Americana textures with fresh, modern sensibilities.
Recorded at James’ home studio, “Bare Essential,” Talkin’ Destination Blues is a labor of love, featuring contributions from talented musicians like Jeremy Stoner on bass and Johnny Cummings on piano. Co-produced by James and Kuhn, the album was mixed by James with additional input from Stephen Roessner and mastered by Grammy-winner David Glasser. Each track is a sonic journey, drawing influences from legendary acts like The Band and Jeff Lynne’s ELO while retaining Singing River’s distinct identity.
