Three iconic rock musicians have come together to cover Bad Brains’ classic song “The Regulator” for Record Store Day. Dave Grohl, Charlie Benante, and Scott Ian have joined forces to pay tribute to the influential punk band and help raise funds for their frontman, H.R.’s healthcare.
The cover, which was released on July 17th, features Grohl on drums, Benante on guitar, and Ian on bass and vocals. The trio’s rendition of “The Regulator” stays true to the original, with their own unique twist and energy. The track is available on limited edition vinyl, with all proceeds going towards H.R.’s medical expenses.
Bad Brains, known for their fusion of punk, reggae, and hardcore, have been a major influence on the rock and punk scene since the late 1970s. The band’s frontman, H.R., has been battling health issues for years and has recently undergone brain surgery. In light of his ongoing medical needs, Grohl, Benante, and Ian decided to use their talents to support their fellow musician.
In a statement, Grohl expressed his admiration for Bad Brains and their impact on his own musical journey. “Bad Brains changed the game for me,” he said. “They were the band that made me want to be in a band. Benante and Ian, both members of the thrash metal band Anthrax, also shared their love for Bad Brains and their desire to help H.R. “We’ve been friends for a long time and Bad Brains has always been one of our favorite bands,” said Benante. “When we heard about H.R.’s health issues, we knew we had to do something to show our support.”
The limited edition vinyl of “The Regulator” is available exclusively at independent record stores, in honor of Record Store Day. The annual event, which was first launched in 2008, celebrates the culture of independent record stores and the role they play in the music industry.
