Tyka Nelson, the sister of legendary musician Prince, has passed away at the age of 64. The singer-songwriter, who released four albums of her own, was also closely involved in her brother’s posthumous archival projects.
Nelson’s death was confirmed by her brother, Omarr Baker, on social media. He wrote, “My sister Tyka was a beautiful soul who touched the lives of many with her music and kind spirit. She will be deeply missed by our family and fans around the world.”
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nelson was the youngest of Prince’s eight siblings. She began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album Royal Blue in 1988. She followed it up with two more albums, Moonbeam Levels in 1990 and Paper Doll in 1994. Her fourth and final album, A Brand New Me, was released in 2008.
Nelson was also a talented songwriter, co-writing several songs with her brother, including “Computer Blue” and “Baby, I’m a Star.” She also collaborated with other artists, such as Mavis Staples and Chaka Khan.
In addition to her own music career, Nelson was heavily involved in her brother’s posthumous archival projects. She worked closely with the Prince Estate to release previously unreleased music and oversee the reissue of his classic albums.
Fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to pay tribute to Nelson and express their condolences to her family. Many have praised her talent and contributions to the music industry, while others have shared personal memories of her kindness and generosity.
Nelson’s death is a great loss to the music world, but her legacy will continue to live on through her music and the impact she had on those around her. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Tyka Nelson.
