Judge Shakura L. Ingram has recused herself from presiding over the RICO case involving rapper YSL, just two days after being assigned to the trial. This comes after she replaced Judge Ural Glanville, who also recused himself from the case due to a potential conflict of interest.
Ingram cited her connection to a courthouse deputy who had an “inappropriate relationship” with one of the defendants in the YSL trial as the reason for her recusal. The deputy, who has not been named, was involved in the initial investigation of the case and had a personal relationship with one of the defendants.
In a statement, Ingram said, “After careful consideration and consultation with my colleagues, I have decided to recuse myself from the RICO case involving YSL. I have a personal connection to a courthouse deputy who was involved in the investigation and had a relationship with one of the defendants. In order to ensure a fair and impartial trial, I believe it is best for me to step down from this case.”
The YSL trial has been highly publicized, with the rapper and his co-defendants facing charges of racketeering, drug trafficking, and weapons offenses. The case has been ongoing for over a year, with multiple delays and changes in judges.
Ingram’s recusal has caused further delays in the trial, as a new judge will now need to be assigned. This has raised concerns about the impact on the defendants’ right to a speedy trial.
YSL, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, has been in custody since his arrest in December 2019. He has maintained his innocence and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The rapper’s lawyer, Drew Findling, expressed disappointment at the latest development, stating, “We are disappointed that Judge Ingram has recused herself from the case. We were looking forward to presenting our defense and finally getting a resolution for our client.”
It is unclear when a new judge will be assigned to the case and when the trial will resume. The recusal of two judges in such a high-profile case has raised questions about the judicial system’s ability to handle complex and sensitive cases.
As the legal proceedings continue, YSL and his co-defendants remain in custody, awaiting their fate. The rapper’s fans and supporters are anxiously waiting for a resolution to the case, hoping for a fair and just outcome.
