Florida rapper Plies has filed a lawsuit against Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy over an unauthorized sample used in the hit song “Wanna Be.”
According to court documents obtained by Rolling Stone, Plies claims that “Wanna Be” illegally samples his 2008 track “Me & My Goons.” The lawsuit also alleges that Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Swag Boy,” which was sampled for “Wanna Be,” also infringes on Plies’ original song.
Plies’ legal team argues that the defendants did not seek permission or obtain a license to use the sample, and that they have profited off of his copyrighted material without his consent.
The lawsuit seeks damages and an injunction to prevent the defendants from continuing to use the sample in “Wanna Be.”
Plies’ team also claims that the unauthorized use of the sample has caused confusion among listeners, as they may believe that Plies is associated with or has endorsed the song.
The rapper’s legal team released a statement saying, “Plies takes his music and his intellectual property seriously, and he will not stand for anyone profiting off of his work without his permission.”
This is not the first time Plies has taken legal action over unauthorized use of his music. In 2019, he sued rapper Kodak Black for using his likeness on merchandise without permission.
Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy have not yet responded to the lawsuit. However, this is not the first time Megan Thee Stallion has faced legal issues over her music. In 2020, she was sued by her former label 1501 Certified Entertainment for breach of contract.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the defendants will respond and if a resolution can be reached outside of court. In the meantime, Plies and his legal team are determined to protect his rights as an artist and ensure that his music is not used without his permission.
