Legendary guitarist Mike Campbell is back with his band, the Dirty Knobs, for their highly anticipated third album, “Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits.” Set to release on June 14, the record boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists, including country superstar Chris Stapleton, folk-rock icon Graham Nash, and singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams.
Campbell, known for his work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed the Dirty Knobs in 2001 as a side project. However, after the passing of Petty in 2017, the band became Campbell’s main focus. “Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits” is their first album since Petty’s death and is a testament to his legacy and influence on Campbell’s music.
Stapleton, who has collaborated with Campbell in the past, lends his powerful vocals to the track “Pistol Packin’ Mama.” Nash, a longtime friend of Campbell’s, joins in on the song “Irish Girl,” adding his signature harmonies to the mix. Williams, who has also worked with Campbell before, contributes her gritty vocals to the track “Fuck That Guy.”
But it’s not just the guest artists that make this album special. Campbell’s bandmates, Jason Sinay, Lance Morrison, and Matt Laug, bring their own unique talents to the table, creating a dynamic and cohesive sound. And of course, the album wouldn’t be complete without the addition of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, who plays on several tracks.
“Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits” is a mix of rock, blues, and country, showcasing Campbell’s versatility as a musician. The album’s title track, “Vagabonds,” is a bluesy number with gritty guitar riffs and soulful vocals. “Fuck That Guy” is a catchy, upbeat tune with a rebellious attitude, while “Irish Girl” is a heartfelt ballad that highlights Campbell’s songwriting skills.
In a recent interview, Campbell expressed his excitement for the album, saying, “I’m really proud of this record. It’s been a labor of love and I can’t wait for people to hear it.” He also mentioned that the album was recorded live in the studio, giving it a raw and authentic feel.
Fans can expect to hear more from the Dirty Knobs in the near future, as they have plans to tour in support of the new album. But for now, “Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits” is a must-listen for any music lover, showcasing the talent and passion of one of rock’s most iconic guitarists.
