Post Death Soundtrack returns with a vengeance on their fourth full-length album, Veil Lifter, released digitally on April 16th, 2024. This 10-track Molotov cocktail of doom, grunge, hardcore, and thrash channels the raw energy and emotion that Jon Ireson and Stephen Moore are known for, but with an unruly, organic live sound that marks a bold departure from the orchestrated industrial landscapes of their previous album, It Will Come Out of Nowhere.
Drawing inspiration from heavyweights like Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, and Nirvana, as well as more modern acts like Russian Circles, Windhand, and YOB, Veil Lifter is a relentless, immersive experience that invites listeners into a world of sludgy riffs, hypnotic grooves, and fierce catharsis. The record is a sonic and thematic assault, packed with incisive, uncensored emotion and a provocative message of resilience and spiritual awakening.
A Raw, Cathartic Vision
Thematically, Veil Lifter digs deep into the darker corners of the human psyche, exploring mental illness, addiction, and the inner battle for survival. Inspired by the phrase “lifting the veil of ignorance” from Eastern philosophy, the album is a reflection on spiritual awakening and personal renewal amidst life’s chaos. “It’s an invocation of protection and spiritual weaponry,” says Moore, who dedicated the album to his late father, Ted George Moore.
Steve Moore reflects on the album’s creation, stating, “Veil Lifter is very much the album I’ve always wanted to make. It’s dark, raw, and cathartic. It was written from a place of deep isolation and chaos during nearly impossible times. But in the end, it’s about perseverance and resilience.”
Moore’s lyrics are drenched in metaphor and dream language, pulling from philosophical ideas like those of Krishnamurti and Zen thought, but ultimately serving as a visceral expression of his personal journey. Tracks like “Lowdown Animal,” where Moore evokes the image of a hyena as a band symbol, reflect the band’s outsider ethos, embodying the idea of the unwelcome, cunning drifter who triumphs over stronger forces through resilience.
A Sonic Shift: Organic, Live, and Visceral
The shift in Post Death Soundtrack’s sound was sparked by Stephen Moore’s daily trove of guitar riffs, many of them slow and dirge-like, which set the tone for the album. Jon Ireson explains, “We knew it was going to be a big change, ditching the electronic production elements we’d used before, but we felt that this was the right direction. Tracks like ‘Bridge Burner’ from the last album hinted at this move.”
The bones of the record came together quickly during two intense week-long sessions, but it was Steve’s layered vocals, fuzzy melodic bass lines, and the addition of Casey Lewis’s intense drumming that truly brought the record to life. “Casey’s personality and feel made this record punch,” says Ireson.
Tracks like “Icy Underground” and “Lowdown Animal” showcase the band’s new sound in full force, with sludgy riffs, doom-heavy atmospheres, and grunge-fueled aggression. The lead single, “Icy Underground,” delves into haunting, doom-laden territories, while “Lowdown Animal” channels the band’s signature “outsider” mentality with ferocious energy and hypnotic grooves. The album’s relentless charge captures the rawness and defiance of Post Death Soundtrack’s mission, leaving no stone unturned.
Visceral Videos and More to Come
In addition to the album’s release, Post Death Soundtrack has also launched a terrifying new music video for “Burrowing Down the Spine,” which visually complements the album’s dark and intense themes. The band continues to push their creative boundaries, blending music and visual art to craft a holistic experience.
Fans can stream the lead single “Icy Underground” and the vicious grunge anthem “Lowdown Animal” on Spotify, with full lyrics available on Bandcamp. A limited edition vinyl run of Veil Lifter is expected to follow the digital release, giving fans the chance to experience the record in a tangible, immersive format.

Your Comment: “Veil Lifter” is very much the album I’ve always wanted to make. The album is intended to be completely uncensored, unashamedly dark, raw emotionally, and therefore, cathartic and freeing. It was written during impossible times, but it’s about resilience.
