Tim Alexander, the former drummer of the iconic band Primus, recently opened up about his decision to leave the group after more than 30 years. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Alexander revealed that the main reason for his departure was a lack of passion for the music.
The drummer, also known as “Herb,” explained that while he had always loved playing with Primus, the constant touring and demands of being in a successful band had taken a toll on his physical and mental health. “I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, it was affecting my mental life, and it was affecting my family life,” he said. “And my heart just wasn’t in it.”
Alexander joined Primus in 1988 and quickly became known for his unique and intricate drumming style, which helped define the band’s sound. However, as the years went on, he found himself feeling burnt out and no longer enjoying the music as much as he used to.
“I think sometimes the passion turns into a job, and that’s when it becomes a little bit of a struggle,” Alexander shared. “I didn’t want to just go through the motions and not give it my all. I wanted to be fully invested in the music, and I just couldn’t do that anymore.”
The decision to leave Primus was not an easy one for Alexander, who had been a part of the band for over three decades. However, he knew it was the right choice for his well-being and his family. “I had to put my health and my family first,” he said. “It was a tough decision, but ultimately, it was the best one for me.”
Since his departure from Primus, Alexander has been focusing on his health and spending time with his family. He also recently released a solo album, “Rhythm of the Mind,” which showcases his diverse musical talents.
As for the future of Primus, Alexander has no hard feelings and wishes the band all the best. “I have nothing but love and respect for those guys,” he said. “I hope they continue to make great music and have success.”
While fans may miss seeing Alexander behind the drum kit with Primus, his decision to prioritize his well-being serves as a reminder that sometimes, stepping away from something you love is the best thing you can do for yourself.
