After four decades in the music industry, Cyndi Lauper is embarking on her farewell tour. But don’t worry, she’s not retiring just yet. The pop icon, known for her hit song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” is simply saying goodbye to the traditional touring lifestyle.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lauper opened up about her decision to embark on a farewell tour and reflected on her musical journey.
“I’ve been touring for 40 years, and it’s been an amazing ride. But it’s also been physically and mentally exhausting,” Lauper shared. “I want to be able to spend more time with my family and focus on other creative projects.”
But don’t expect Lauper to completely disappear from the music scene. She plans to continue writing and recording music, as well as exploring other artistic endeavors.
“I’ll always be a musician at heart. It’s who I am,” she said. “But I also have a passion for other forms of art, like painting and writing. I want to have the time to fully immerse myself in those passions.”
Throughout her career, Lauper has been inspired by a diverse range of musical heroes, from Janis Joplin to David Bowie. She credits these artists for shaping her unique sound and style.
“I’ve always been drawn to artists who were unapologetically themselves and pushed the boundaries of what was considered ‘normal’,” Lauper explained. “They showed me that it’s okay to be different and to express yourself in your own way.”
And that’s exactly what Lauper has done throughout her career. From her colorful fashion choices to her powerful vocals, she has always stayed true to herself and her artistry.
“I never wanted to fit into a certain mold or be put in a box. I just wanted to be me,” she said. “And I hope that my music has inspired others to do the same.”
As she prepares to bid farewell to the traditional touring lifestyle, Lauper is grateful for the support and love from her fans throughout the years.
“I am so grateful for the fans who have been with me on this journey. They have given me so much love and support, and I couldn’t have done it without them,” she shared. “I may be saying goodbye to touring, but I’ll never stop making music and connecting with my fans.”
So, while this may be the end of an era for Lauper, it’s certainly not the end of her musical journey. She’ll continue to spread joy and inspire others through her art, and that’s something to celebrate. As Lauper famously sang, “Girls just want to have fun,” and she’s certainly had a lot of it throughout her career.
