Griff, the rising British pop star, recently released her highly anticipated single “Last Night’s Mascara” after years of it sitting in her graveyard of demos. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she opened up about the journey of rescuing the song and how it empowered her as an artist.
The 20-year-old singer-songwriter, whose real name is Sarah Faith Griffiths, revealed that “Last Night’s Mascara” was originally written when she was just 15 years old. However, she never felt satisfied with the song and it ended up being scrapped and forgotten. But during the pandemic, Griff found herself revisiting her old demos and stumbled upon the track once again.
“I listened to it and thought, ‘This is actually really good,'” she shared. “I had a newfound appreciation for it and decided to give it another chance.”
Griff then worked with her producer to revamp the song and give it a fresh sound. The result is a catchy and empowering anthem about embracing imperfections and living in the moment. “It’s about not taking yourself too seriously and just having fun,” she explained.
Releasing “Last Night’s Mascara” has been a liberating experience for Griff, who felt like she finally completed a puzzle that had been missing a piece. “It’s like I’ve closed a chapter in my life,” she said. “I feel like I’ve grown so much as an artist and as a person since I first wrote the song.”
The music video for the single, directed by Griff herself, features a diverse group of women dancing and having fun, embracing their flaws and insecurities. “I wanted to show that it’s okay to be imperfect and to just let go and have a good time,” she shared.
Griff also recently joined Sabrina Carpenter on her tour, where she got to perform “Last Night’s Mascara” for the first time in front of a live audience. She described the experience as a “full-circle moment” and an homage to her teenage years, where she would attend concerts and dance with her friends.
“It was amazing to see the audience singing along and dancing with me,” she said. “It felt like a celebration of girlhood and just being carefree.”
With “Last Night’s Mascara,” Griff has proven that sometimes, the best things come from revisiting the past and giving something a second chance. She hopes the song will inspire others to embrace their imperfections and live in the moment, just like it has empowered her.
